What is salt belt?

The Salt Belt refers to a region in the United States that experiences heavy salt usage on roads during the winter months to combat icy and snowy conditions. This region includes states in the Northeast, Midwest, and parts of the Upper Midwest.

In these areas, salt is used as a de-icing agent on roads to improve traction and prevent accidents during winter weather. However, the excessive use of salt can have negative environmental impacts by contaminating water sources, harming wildlife, and corroding infrastructure.

Efforts are being made to reduce salt usage in the Salt Belt region through the use of alternative de-icing agents, improved application techniques, and road salt management programs. These initiatives aim to minimize the environmental impact of road salt while still ensuring safe driving conditions in winter.
